Zenyatta's Distaff by scenceable Zenyatta's Distaff by scenceable
After I drew the picture of Rachel I wanted to do one of Zenyatta. I finished the horse and rider part quickly but I can never think of what to put in track backgrounds, since its always something ugly in the reference picture.

But, in the end I figured it out. I looked through some santa anita infield photos (when the infield wasn't full of people and other things). I figure since I already cut out the other horse in the drawing this wasn't going to be too realistic anyways

I sort of wish I'd drawn her bigger in the picture, but oh well.

this was the reference I used for most of it, along with some other pictures of zen for her tack and things:

Done in derwent colorsofts and polychromos (colored pencils) on 9x12 inch paper. Took about 3-4 hours.

You have got wonderful direction. It really emphasises movement, as do your pencil strokes. The horse is wonderfully shaded  But where's the jockey's arm? o,O

Thank you! :D Uhh it's supposed to be behind the horse's hair/ neck, lol :XD: It does seem to just disappear

The position of the horse and rider matches up well with the track and the direction the horse is going. The highlights and shadows on Zenyatta make her look very life-like.

Beautiful picture!
The horses' proportions are very nicely done, I'm sure that angle was hard to capture! Great job on incorporating colors into the picture, like the subtle blues in the horses' coat :)
I like the size of the horse in the picture, I think the amount of background you have looks very nice. It's a beautiful background too, the colors are lovely and the trees were a nice touch

wow thanks so much! The reference helped with the angle a lot, I do have trouble drawing horses from there :)

I know what you mean, especially galloping horses. Sometimes it's hard to get that feeling of speed :S

oh- forgot to add- the only thing needed was a little dirt fly up from the hoves
