Description

Trade with =DarkAngel613613 of her IRL horses, Roland and Elko.

I used this photo as a reference: [link]

You can see her gorgeous half here:

I made the background more fantasyish than I intended. I am trying to refine my coloring style so tried blending a lot less. It looks grainy but maybe grainy isn't "bad" lol. There are some issues, like with the shore line and the waterfall, but overall I'm happy with it

Firstly, I think this is one of your best drawings yet. I can see the change in your colouring style and I have to say it is a HUGE improvement. I’ve always loved the richness of your colouring, but some of your other pieces look a bit ‘muddy’ where you have blended indiscriminately. This is much better, its crisper, clearer and brighter, the colours are fresh and appealing to look at.
I quite like the grainy effect in this drawing, but if it bothers you, then I recommend you try drawing on a smoother paper. Personally, I like using hotpress watercolour paper for my coloured pencil drawings.

Background: I think its beautiful! It has a good sense of distance and openness, I can almost breathe the fresh air. The trees are so pretty, and I like the spray from the waterfall. I agree with your thoughts about the BG being a bit ‘fantasy’ but it’s a believable fantasy, its very pretty and the horses look like they belong there. Its good.

The horses: Your grasp on anatomy looks good to me, There are a couple of tiny issues- where you changed the flow of the chestnut’s mane, it makes the neck look a little awkward. The angle of the bay horse’s near foreleg is slightly inaccurate, it’s a little too bulky above the knee and the knee should be slightly more flexed. These are just tiny nitpicks though, and I wouldn’t have spotted them without looking at the photo. Also, if I were too be really fussy, the colouring of the horses is a bit over the top for my tastes. The bay horse in particular has some bright white highlights where there were none in the photo, its got a bit too much contrast and looks garish in comparison with the BG.

Having said all that, I LOVE this drawing. I think its my fav piece of yours so far. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
