Dianoetic by scenceable Dianoetic by scenceable
Dianoetic is a ooak (one of a kind) arabian unicorn sculpture made from polymer clay over a wire and foil armature. She is about 10 inches tall to the tip of her horn, and has a body length (chest to bum) of about 5 inches. She has turquoise resin eyes.

When I started making unicorns in 2008 I always did them in super vibrant, iridescent colours but lately have been sticking to natural horse colours. A friend suggested I try something different with this one (I was originally going to paint her chestnut!) and I couldn't be happier with the result. I used interference paint and micro powders so she is super iridescent and changes colours a bit in different lighting. Her hair is a mix of dyed mohair in dark purples, greens, and some blue. She balances on two legs using extra supports that stretch down under the feathering. I've also been practicing indoor photos with some coloured paper, I think it worked out well. The weather has been too gross to risk taking sculptures outside.

Dianoetic was sold before I even had a chance to do proper photos of her, so I'll likely do more unicorns in bright colours in the future! If you are interested in a commission check out my website here: [link] sculptures start at $200.

If you are interested in following my sculpture work and seeing progress photos feel free to check out my facebook [link] or tumblr [link]

Thanks for looking!

Where'd you get the powders? I've been wanting to do a project for a while, but can never find the right powders D:

Still love this piece by the way ^_^

sorry it's taken me so long to respond, the powders are Jacquard Pearl ex powders and you can get them at lots of places including online. The paint itself is Golden brand interference paint, CT-violet-green, interference gold, I don't remember the rest =P

Very nicely done! :)

Question! I'm also a sculptor and thinking about doing some resin eyes on my figures...how did you make the eyes? Or did you buy them somewhere? I'm familiar with sculpting, molding, and casting...and I also have some very sweet people I can recommend you to if you ever want to get your sculpts cast (I'm hiring them soon because I hate the molding and casting process).

Thank you! I buy them from Dreaming Tree Studio, she has a website and an etsy and is ~CozmicDreamer on here. I'm pretty sure she just prints out the eye pattern and casts a little half circle of clear resin and sticks the print out onto that. I'd love the recommendations, I have a few people I've been researching who are in the model horse trade already, but it'd be good to look into others :)

Question: where do you get the soft foil for molding underneath the clay?

Baking question: I've been experimenting with super sculpy. But I'm not sure how to bake something that's being wrapped around a large glass bottle. Any suggestions?

The foil I use is just whatever I find cheap at the grocery store, same stuff I'd use in the kitchen. As for the glass, I think you could bake the glass bottle with the clay on there. I'm not sure how well it would stick, or if the temperature would cause the clay to separate from the glass, but I'd imagine the glass itself would be okay in the oven. People sometimes use heat guns for things they can't put in the oven, I never have but it's a possibility! :)

wow! She is amazing! I love how different she looks with all the colours, and I bet she looks even better in real life :D The level of detail is just fantastic, she must have taken a very long time to do.I look forward to seeing more colourful unicorns (although I love your natural coloured ones too ;) )
