Artist's Comments

This is for *Equinus's contest to depict a culture of your choice using your characters. I decided to do Arabia.

I looked into the arabian costume a bit, and aside from looking gorgeous, the costumes were symbolic of making the horses like equals. Many arabian horses were kept indoors, spoiled, doted upon, etc. and the costumes and other adornments further emphasized this.

I drew my arabian pegasus character, Illyria. Here she is in the dessert, running through the sand, ready to take off. I tried to make her wings blur a bit. Originally the wings were going to be faint and hard to see, like maybe they weren't really there, but I like this better.

I like how the horse turned out, and those tassels were fun to draw. The sand still bothers me. I have no idea how to color that much sand and make it look interesting. The sky ended up alright, even without clouds or anything. I don't know, I just get bored drawing large flat areas :XD:

I looked through some photos of the dessert and one photo of a horse in costume, just for inspiration. I didn't use any references :)

Anyways, this was done in faber castell polychromos, and blended with prismacolors. It took about 3 hours in total. It was drawn on 9x12 inch paper.

Hope you like it~

edit: sorry the photo is slightly blurry. The coloring itself is smudgy but not that much ^^;

You've improved so much with your equine anatomy since I first found your gallery, but you've never lost your own signature style! I love your rich colors and the way you set the cool blues against the warm oranges of the desert landscape.

The structure and pose of your equine subject is beautifully done, and I don't have the cred to start critiqueing anatomy. I think you might want to double check your perspective in the future though - something is off about the angle of the horse's body in relation to the far wing. It looks like it's folded back, while the wing in the foreground is stretched.

Nice job with the feathers and tassels! I think my only beef with the costume in general is that your horse is moving really fast - shouldn't that forward motion be putting more wind drag on the tassels, and the shawl of the person on its back? They're going up, but the way the body is positioned makes it look like they're going forward as well.

The background isn't bad, but next time I'd suggest working in smaller areas at a time and using smaller strokes to create more detail. The sand and sky looks like you got a bit impatient with it and hurried - but that could also be the medium. I do like that you blended colors in the sky.

Overall, beautiful piece!

Can I start off by saying I absolutely love this? It's gorgeous. :faint: I love love arabians, especially those costumes they wear. This piece is really good in regards to color; the sand has a lot of warm tones, where the horse has a lot of blue along with the sky. The movement is also amazing! I can almost see her running actoss the page, kicking up loads of sand. It's breathtaking!

One thing that sticks out to me is how the two bushes in the back are on the same "plane." They look very close to each other and equal distance from the viewer. If one was pushed back farther, or more were added in the very back of the dune, it would create a better feeling of depth.

The horse doesn't have a lot to critique, to be honest! :D It would be cool to see some more of her chest underneath the fringe, just to show how that far front leg is stretching back.

The mountains are great (I love the bit of brown you added in- it makes it interesting!) The only thing I see with them is how the big one kind of "dies off" onto the side of the paper. If there was more variation in the shading, or another smaller mountain was beside it, you could "bump up" that area.

Excellent blur on the wings! And for colored pencil? Wow! I can never get it smudgy enough. :giggle:
